Many people don’t realize just how many calories are in alcoholic beverages – and it’s a lot! Recent research shows that on a given day, almost 20 percent of men and 6 percent of women consume more than 300 calories from alcoholic drinks. For an average person, that’s about 15 percent of their total calorie intake for the entire day!
Nutritional expert Joy Nielsen says that “a lot of people just don’t think about the calories in alcoholic beverages.” It can be quite a bit, though. Wine averages about 120 calories per 5 ounce drink; beer averages about 150 calories per 12 ounce drink, and hard liquor averages about 100 calories per 1.5 ounce serving.
“Those excess daily calories can cause you to put on a pound per month, or 12 pounds each year,” says Joa Salge Blake, a clinical professor in nutrition at Boston University. This is especially an issue around the holidays, when we are typically eating more calories than we should anyway, and attending holiday parties too.
The excess calories are compounded when they are included in a sugary drink like a margarita or a dairy-based drink like holiday egg nog. A 10 ounce margarita can have 400-500 calories and a typical 6 ounce egg nog can have as many as 400 calories. So, be careful what you eat and drink this holiday season.
When you do splurge on alcoholic drinks, drink responsibly. That means not overdoing the alcohol or the calories!
