I have to give it to Dr. Oz. On his show Monday; he featured someone who fundamentally disagreed with almost everything he believes about fitness, obesity and weight loss. I don’t know of too many TV personalities who would welcome someone to their show who didn’t share their opinions!

Dr. Glenn Gaesser is a physical fitness and obesity expert at ASU, so he should know what he’s talking about when it comes to weight loss. He has written 3 books, including Big Fat Lies, and he claims that there is really no epidemic of obesity in America today!… Read the rest

Does your family’s health, at least in part, depend on where you live? A long-term study by the University of Chicago finds that it does. The study followed 4,500 women with children who lived in public housing in Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, LA and New York City.

It turns out that people in poorer neighborhoods are at a higher risk of becoming too heavy. The study found that they have less access to grocery stores that are well-stocked with healthy foods like fresh fruits and vegetables. A recent commentary in the Journal of the American Medical Association suggested placing children with severe obesity under protective custody as an alternative to bariatric surgery or other intervention programs. Now, this is obviously an overreach, but the article’s main point is important.

The article made the case that responsibility for severe childhood obesity, at least in part, should be attributed to the family or parents. This is a striking paradigm shift, but maybe one that is appropriate. Obesity is one of the most challenging medical conditions facing health-care providers today, and traditional educational… Read the rest

If you’re like many Americans, the last time you met with your doctor, he or she may have told you to “improve your diet” or to “eat healthier.” But when probed, most doctors don’t actually know what that means! I know it is hard to believe, but it’s true. You often can’t ask your doctor how to eat healthier – they don’t know!

Your doctor isn’t to blame, though. According to a recent study published by the Association of American Medical Colleges, the average doctor gets less than 20 hours of nutrition education throughout their entire medical school… Read the rest
