We often discuss the importance of reading food labels in this blog. Healthy eating really starts with knowing what it is you’re putting in your mouth. Women’s Health Magazine sites a new study from Johns Hopkins University that provides an interesting take on labels.

They are proposing that junk food packages also include the amount of exercise it will take to burn off the number of calories in one serving of the food. We’ve previously written in this blog, as well as others, that childhood obesity is a growing problem in the U.S. More than one out of every three children is now overweight or obese, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control.

Thank that’s not such a big deal? Think that maybe they’ll just grow out of it? It’s actually deadly serious for kids. For the first time in history, today’s children are not expected to live as long as their parents!

That’s a really good question, as it turns out! It seems like their are “all natural” versions of everything from ice cream to salad dressing, from potato chips to dog food. So what does it actually mean when a product says it is “all natural?”

Actually, the term has never been fully defined. The most meaningful guidance comes from an FDA informal policy written more than 20 years ago. Fiber is so important to your health. It not only keeps you regular, recent studies show that a fiber-rich diet can help you control your weight and even trim your waistline.

Most of us have far too little fiber in our diets. The American Dietetic Association recommends that healthy adults consume between 20 and 35 grams of fiber per day. Unfortunately, studies have found that the average intake for adult Americans is only 14-15 grams per day.
