Ever wonder why kids tend to shy away from many vegetables? Well, a recent study by Temple University’s Center for Obesity Research found that about 70% of children are sensitive to bitterness. This sensitivity makes vegetables like broccoli unpleasant to them.

So, what can we learn from this study? First, simply serving steamed vegetables and “forcing” kids to eat them probably isn’t going to work (no surprise to many parents!). A new analysis of federal data provides a pretty dismal picture of children’s heart health. It suggests that the current generation of teens could be at significantly higher risk of heart disease.

This study, conducted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, focused on children between 12 and 19 years of age. It found that teens performed poorly overall on a set of criteria developed by the American Heart Association. These criteria are generally thought to measure individuals against a cardiovascular health ideal.

Family law experts say that mothers and fathers have now opened a new front in custody lawsuits – obesity. They are increasingly accusing each other of not providing appropriate nutrition for their children and contributing to their children’s poor health and obesity.

It turns out that healthy eating can start paying dividends for children even before conception. A study led by doctors at Stanford University School of Medicine, along with others, found that women who eat a low fat, fiber-rich diet in the year before becoming pregnant had a significantly lower risk of certain birth defects.

The study showed that women who ate healthy diets, both during pregnancy and in the year before becoming pregnant, gave birth to fewer infants with two of the most common birth defects – neural tube defects (defects of the brain and spinal cord)… Read the rest
