revised-food-labels300The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has just announced proposed changes to food labeling. Their proposal reflects concerns about the high obesity rate in the U.S. and the quality (or lack of quality) of the American diet.

The FDA is proposing that bigger, bolder print be used for the number of calories per serving. They also want to add a line item for grams of added sugar. Both of these are important changes. These are both good changes. Although calories aren’t the only thing that consumers should focus on, the reality is that it is important to many, many people. So, making the calories per serving easier to read is helpful.

Showing added sugars on a separate line is also important today, since so many products include additional sugar to enhance flavor. And, Americans consume far too much sugar, so being able to select products that don’t include extra, unneeded sugar is also good.

Another change proposed by the FDA is to make sure that the serving size shown on packages actually reflects the portion size people typically consume in the real world. For example, currently a 12 ounce bottle of soda shows one serving per bottle, while a 20 ounce bottle shows two servings per bottle. The FDA would like both 12 and 20 ounce bottles to equal one serving, since people typically drink and entire bottle at one time.

These changes are still a ways off, and the FDA has not formally released a schedule for review and adoption, but their preliminary release of these proposed changes is a good first step.
