Girl Eating AppleA recent study by the American Diabetes Association looked at the cost of health care and work-related costs associated with diabetes. This is an increasing issue for businesses as well as individuals, since both share in the costs.

The U.S. has seen a 41 percent increase in the costs associated with diabetes since 2007. That’s a huge increase! Most of that increase is a result of more people being diagnosed with the disease, not increased medical costs for each person, and that’s even scarier!

We know from other studies that excess weight is a leading contributor to diabetes, so it shouldn’t really be a surprise that more people are being diagnosed with the disease every year. Every 3 seconds someone in the U.S. is diagnosed with diabetes, and fully 80 percent of those people are also overweight or obese. It is not by chance that the states with the highest incidence of diabetes are the same states with the highest portion of overweight and obese people. These are directly related!

Taking control of your health by developing a healthy relationship with food is the first step in preventing the onset of diabetes. If you eat a healthy, balanced diet, your chances of ever developing the disease are much lower. And that’s important, because once a person is diagnosed with diabetes, they will have it for the rest of their life. If left untreated, it can lead to complications including pain from nerve damage, blindness, kidney disease and even amputation in extreme cases.

So, the lesson here is that what you eat matters! In most cases, you can avoid both the complications and the expense associated with diabetes by eating right. Develop a healthy relationship with food and eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean protein, and complex carbohydrates, and low in fat, sugar and artificial chemicals.
