Along with healthy eating, exercise is essential to good health. But many of us just don’t have the time – or so we think! Everyone has time to exercise. You just have to be creative.

Regular exercise is so important to a healthy lifestyle. It not only makes you feel better and gives you more energy, regular exercise can help lower your risk of diabetes and other chronic illnesses.

Contrary to popular belief, exercising doesn’t require a gym membership. It doesn’t require a treadmill, weights or a lot of time either. And it certainly doesn’t require the latest exercise equipment that the person on the infomercial says is essential to your health!

All that’s requires is a little bit of forethought – very little! You can burn 250-350 calories per hour by just walking! Walking can help you feel better, enjoy food more, and look healthier.

Here are 5 tips for getting more exercise each day:

Plan walking into your commute. Why circle the parking lot at work looking for the space closest to the elevator or door? Try parking some distance away so you can get a good walk. It will get your heart pumping and, as an added bonus, you’ll have time to think about what you want to accomplish during the rest of the day. If you ride the subway, bus or train, get off one stop early and walk the rest of the way. You might enjoy seeing the bustle of the early morning city, and it’s a great time to think about your day, too.

Visit the water cooler often. Instead of filling up a water bottle to drink at your desk, use a smaller glass or coffee mug. You’ll have to refill it more often and that will get you up and walking. Make sure to keep drinking water throughout the day, though. One way to help ensure you drink enough is committing to fill your glass at least once per hour. You may even want to set an alarm on your cell phone to remind you.

Take the stairs. When I worked in a high rise, I made the commitment to always use the stairs for trips of 4 floors or less. It was hard in the beginning – I was huffing and puffing after just a floor or two! But, over time, I didn’t think anything of going 4 flights or more. Just start easy and take your time. Start with just trips of one floor up or down, and then add longer trips when you can. And, you don’t have to be concerned about others seeing you labor in the beginning. You’ll find that, most of the time, you’re the only one in the stairwell!

Take your meetings on the move. If you have space in your work area, take your calls with a wireless headset and walk while you talk. When you need to meet with someone, don’t reserve a conference room. Instead, talk while you walk.

Do the walking yourself. When you shop, take the stairs instead of the escalator. If you travel, skip the moving walkways found at most airports. If you’re really in a hurry to catch your flight, then you can take the moving walkway, but don’t just stand. Instead, keep walking and get their twice as fast! It doesn’t take much planning to add exercise into your daily routine.
