It seems that every time you turn around there is somebody claiming to have “discovered” a new “super food.” Blueberries, broccoli, oats, oranges, green tea, yogurt, and a whole list of other foods have received the super food “sticker.” But are they really super?

The short answer is “No.” Research indicates that super foods are more marketing hype than actual fact. The term “super food” didn’t even exist 10 years ago. It was coined by Dr. Steven Pratt in his book Super Foods Rx. The book was an instant bestseller and really gave birth to an entire industry of buzzwords, including super foods, antioxidants, and micronutrients, among others.

In the decade since the Super Foods Rx book was published, there have been literally thousands of studies on so called super foods. One finding from these studies is that the antioxidant properties of each food may vary greatly from variety to variety. Within the blueberry family, for example, there can be a fourfold difference in polyphenol content from one variety to the next.

While scientists still can’t fully explain the benefits of all micronutrients found in super foods, they have found that plain old every day fruits and vegetables may be just as healthy. One researcher at Tufts University recently said, “Little nobody fruits are often less likely than the high-end super foods to get research attention, and we can’t say anything about fruits we haven’t studied in detail. Who knows – maybe the common peach is the best thing out there!”

What we do know is that all fruits and vegetables are good for you, and eating a variety of them each day has been shown to support a healthy lifestyle. So, don’t be swayed by the hype! There likely is no real “super food.” There’s no current scientific evidence that eating any particular food will drastically improve your health.

Instead, focus on maintaining a diet that is low in fat, added sugar and processed foods. Healthy diets should include fresh fish and poultry, along with a variety of fruits and vegetables.

    Superfoods are very much in vogue these days, but sometimes people just don’t know which one to go for.       Yes, eating should be fun, not stressful! As long as you mostly eat a variety of fruits and vegetables, along with lean protein and complex carbohydrates, you’ll be giving your body what it needs to be healthy. And every now and then, having a “treat” isn’t going hurt!
