It appears that now it is a challenge to even advocate for “recommended” sugar levels in foods! The Center for Science in the Public Interest has filed a petition with the Food and Drug Administration urging the agency to identify a safe level for added sugars in beverages.

That seems like a “no-brainer” to me. Why wouldn’t you want to know what sugar level is safe? High-fructose corn syrup and other added sugars are “generally recognized as safe” by the FDA. The problem is that many groups believe that, although these sugars are generally safe, they are not safe when used at the levels and concentrations commonly found in soda.

All the Center for Science is asking the FDA to do is study the issue and set recommended safe levels for sugar. But, opponents say, “not so fast!” They think that we shouldn’t start blaming one component of the diet for something as complex as obesity. To me, that’s false logic.

As I have written previously, obesity is a complex topic, and no one factor can be held totally responsible for the country’s current challenges. However, when we do find something that so clearly contributes to obesity, we should take action. Setting a “safe” level for sugar in soda seems like a good first step. At least then, manufacturers and, more importantly, consumers will be able to make informed choices when they purchase and consume sodas.

    I agree with you, Michael. It sounds to me like the sugar industry may be doing to the FDA what the pharmaceutical industry has been doing for years…controlling it. I never thought of the sugar industry as such a powerful player but then again, look at how much sugar the world consumes. Very interesting article, thank you!

  2. I’ve been hearing a lot about sugar lately – and wonder – is any level really “safe”?
    Having been brought up in the 60′s with sugar as on of our primary dietary staples (Think Sugar Pops, Honeycombs or Frosted Flakes for breakfast and Twinkies for afternoon snack) and now seeing the levels of obesity and dis-ease in most of my contemporaries it’s worth questioning I think…..

    I have tried to eliminate as much sugar as I can from my diet – it’s amazing how if you look it’s pretty much everywhere in more “mainstream” food (or is it really food?) sources.
