Healthy KidAlmost 1/3 of all children between the ages of 2 and 19 are overweight or obese, according to government data. This is horrible, since we know that an overweight child is far more likely to become an overweight adult and that can lead to a whole number of chronic disease including diabetes, heart disease.

A recent study found that most children’s meals at the nation’s top restaurants are failing when it comes to good nutrition and healthy eating. The study was done by the Center for Science in the Public Interest and the findings are downright scary!

Among other things, the study found that 91 percent of children’s meals at the restaurant chains studies do not meet the National Restaurant Association’s Kids LiveWell menu standards. Specifically, 50 percent of the children’s meals contained more than 600 calories, and many were more than 1000 calories! If you have cooked for children than you’ve probably been there – your children don’t want to eat what you’ve fixed for them. Kids can be very opinionated about what they eat, and their likes/dislikes can change almost daily.

Partly, they may be reacting to foods that are new and/or different. Sometimes it is the color or smell of a certain food that they don’t like, and not the taste. Perhaps you’ve already seen one of their new ads. Coca-Cola company is airing a 2 minute spot on CNN, Fox News and MSNBC to say that they support anti-obesity campaigns. In the ads, they say they have don’t their part by providing drinks with fewer calories and drinks in smaller sizes. They caution people against consuming too many calories from any source, including soft drinks.
