Many people don’t realize just how many calories are in alcoholic beverages – and it’s a lot! Recent research shows that on a given day, almost 20 percent of men and 6 percent of women consume more than 300 calories from alcoholic drinks. For an average person, that’s about 15 percent of their total calorie intake for the entire day!

I still believe that Halloween is a holiday invented by dentists! Nothing does a better or faster job of rotting kids’ teeth than sticky, chewy candy. (I’m joking, of course – I love dentists!)

And the expectations are high. Kids expect something good when they knock on your door and hold out their bag. I can still remember which houses in my neighborhood were known for the best treats, and on the flip side, which ones to avoid.

It’s summer and that means barbeques, picnics, and parties. And, it often means eating lots of food too! So how can you join in the fun without overindulging? Try using the “rule of 2” at your next get together.

Here’s how it works: Each time through the buffet line, put just 2 different foods on your plate, either 2 healthy choices, or one healthy and one less healthy. For example, the first time through the line, you could select green salad and a barbequed chicken wing. On the 2nd pass, it could be some raw veggies and potato salad.
