Sugar – The Silent Killer!
-
18Feb2014
Americans consume too much sugar, and it’s killing us! A recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) finds that more than 70 percent of U.S. adults get more than the recommended amount of their daily calories from added sugars. Even more shocking is the direct link to higher levels of sugar consumption and higher incidents of death due to cardiovascular disease! Added sugar in our diet is literally killing us!
We are not talking about sugars that naturally occur in foods, like the sugar in fruit. The study looks specifically at those sugars added to … Read the rest

Are Diet Fries for Real?
-
25Sep2013
Burger King just announced a new product – diet French fries! But, is a “diet fry” for real? As with most nutrition-related topics, the answer isn’t clearly “yes” or “no.”
Yes, Burger King’s new “Satisfries” are better than regular French fries. They contain about 30 percent less fat and 20 percent fewer calories than regular fries. And, that’s almost 40 percent less fat and 30 percent fewer calories than their closest competitor, McDonald’s fries.
No, these fries are not really “healthy,” though. A regular serving still contains 11 grams of fat and 270 calories, so they are hardly “diet” food. … Read the rest

Obesity Myths? Be Careful What You Read
-
11Feb2013
A new report published in the New England Journal of Medicine says that “dogma and fallacies are detracting from real solution to the nation’s weight problems.”
Among other beliefs that people have about obesity and weight loss, this study claims that skipping breakfast will not lead to weight gain, and that school gym classes don’t make a big difference in kids’ weight. The study claims these are myths.
But, there is a “catch.” Independent researchers say that the authors of this study have deep financial ties to food, beverage and weight-loss product markers, and that “taints” their results. In fact, … Read the rest

How Food Ads Mislead You
-
28Jan2013
I read an interesting article the other day that contrasted the record food production in 2012 with the record starvation and malnutrition worldwide in that same year. How could we be producing more food than ever, yet more people are going hungry?
The author attributed the seemingly contradicting information to what he called the “commoditization” of food. In other words, food is more and more being treated as a “commodity” that can be bought and sold for a profit, like any other commodity. Because of the focus on profit, food tends to be moved to areas where it can be … Read the rest
Healthy Foods More Filling
-
19Dec2012
The journal, Pediatrics, just published the results of a very interesting study. In the study of children’s snack foods, researchers found that children who were given a combination of healthy foods consumed significantly fewer calories before feeling full than those given potato chips. Even more important was the finding that calorie intake was more pronounced in those children who were overweight or obese and those who were from “low-involvement” families.
In the study, children who were given vegetables only consumed about 60 calories before feeling full, while children in the group who were given chips only consumed more than … Read the rest
